TARGET AUDIENCE & PURPOSE

Anyone in an organisation can be a leader, because we all have the power to influence others. This course will benefit anyone wishing to improve their leadership and influencing skills no matter what their job role.

PREREQUISITES

A basic knowledge of computers.

OVERVIEW

Leadership is influencing and inspiring others to do what needs to be done. In this course we consider how we can all develop our leadership and influencing skills, from assessing our current abilities and leadership style, to creating and sharing a vision that others will buy into.

COURSE CONTENT

What is leadership?
We start by defining leadership and considering the characteristics of well-known leaders before completing a self-assessment of our own leadership qualities and pinpointing areas for development. We also discuss key leadership models, including the Situational Leadership Model and the Transformational Leadership Model, and consider their relevance to business today.

Inspiring a shared vision
Here we contemplate our vision: seeing it and believing in it, nurturing and developing it, and then inspiring others to buy into it too. To do this we must communicate our vision clearly and identify the benefits for others.

Modelling the way
The best leaders are examples of what they want their followers to be. By definition, a leader is in the lead, not at the rear. In this module we consider the importance of being a respected role model and discuss ways in which we can really 'walk the talk'. We need to challenge the norm, search out opportunities to change and innovate, and seek constantly to learn from mistakes and improve.

Enabling others to act
The goal of a leader is to empower others to work: to develop your followers to the point where you can delegate tasks without a lot of oversight. The extent to which you can do this will determine the extent of your success.

Influencing skills
The best leaders are able to influence others to do something willingly. In this module we focus on the art of persuasion and the principles of influence.

Setting goals
To achieve our vision we need to set specific, targeted goals. Without them, we won't know whether our vision is being accomplished. In this module we determine what your goals should be and how best to achieve them.
